There has been a lot of speculation around the Anaheim Ducks. Rumors about firing head coach Bruce Boudreau and trading some key pieces of the Ducks franchise have continued to arise after what has been a disastrous start for Anaheim. The Ducks are 2-7-1 and are dead last in goals for with 14 total in 10 games. With almost the exact same roster as a year ago when Anaheim went to the western conference finals, the Ducks struggles are puzzling. Offensive struggles could lead to a trade in the near future.
According to hockeybuzz.com, the Ducks could be looking to move defenseman Cam Fowler for a top 6 forward. The Bruins have been linked to Fowler potentially moving Louis Eriksson to Anaheim for the 23 year old defenseman. However if a deal were not to get done with Boston, could Buffalo make a move for Fowler?
Rumors a year ago said that Buffalo and Anaheim were potentially negotiating a trade that could swap Tyler Myers and Cam Fowler according to Sabrestop.com's Joe DiBiase and NESN.com. Joe's article about the trade rumor is below.
Myers was moved to Winnipeg so this trade rumor quickly died.
A year later the Sabres are looking for a offensive, left handed defenseman that can help a defense that has been forced to rotate Mike Weber and Carlo Colaiacovo into the starting lineup. Besides Josh Gorges and Jake McCabe, the rest of Buffalo's defenders are right handed.
Fowler would be a great fit in Buffalo. In 11 games he has struggled with only 2 points and a -7 +/-. However his ability to produce on the power play and the speed he has in his game is something that Buffalo lacks.
A season ago Fowler notched 7 goals and 27 assists for a total of 34 points. He has been a consistent two way defender throughout his career.
So what would a trade between the Sabres and Ducks look like? Well if hockeybuzz.com is carrying an actual story with the Bruins potentially interested in a Eriksson for Fowler swap, than the Sabres may have to give up a top 6 forward. Would Tim Murray be willing to part ways with a Matt Moulson for one of the best young defenseman in the NHL?
With the depth at forward it would be considered. However Anaheim would most likely want a mid round draft pick to go along with it. Murray may feel that Buffalo's defense will improve greatly with the return of Zach Bogosian and that the Sabres don't need to give away resources for a player.
Fowler is set to make 12 million dollars over the next 3 years making 4 million a season. Buffalo has over 8 million in cap space according to General Fanager. Plenty of room to bring him in if Buffalo and Anaheim made a deal.
Perhaps with Jakob Silfverberg struggling to produce any offense this year, Buffalo could look to kick the tires on the Swedish winger. Johann Larsson could also be used as a trade chip in a scenario such as this.
There is no official report or evidence that Buffalo or even Boston for that matter has contacted the Ducks about Cam Fowler. Hockeybuzz.com is often known to whiff on reported trade rumors. Eklund would probably come back with the response that they are defined as "rumors" for a reason. Fair but insiders often report rumors that turn into real trades. Hockeybuzz.com isn't the most accurate in that category.
Either way it is interesting to think about Buffalo making a move to get a defenseman. They need an offensive, left handed defender that can help this team contend for the playoffs. Although the rumor may not carry any weight, it is certainly plausible to believe the struggling Ducks are looking to move Fowler for a veteran forward.
