Yesterday watching the Sabres battle back against the New York Rangers, seeing Jack Eichel thrive playing with Zemgus Girgensons made me realize one thing. The Sabres need a true top six winger.
Now that may not make much sense after Girgensons moved over to winger and had success but in reality it opened my eyes to the problem. Jack Eichel can be a all time great if he has the right players around him. Despite playing with Matt Moulson, Phil Varone, and Marcus Foligno in recent weeks, Eichel has posted 18 points in the last 17 games.
Moving Girgensons to wing helped Eichel out in a great deal positng assists on both Girgensons goals. It showed what Eichel can truly do with a productive winger. However when the Sabres reach full strength and are ready to make a run in the playoffs, I believe Tim Murray will need to find a true winger to pair with Eichel and Evander Kane.
Zemgus Girgensons can play both winger and center, but the best case scenario is the Latvian lined up in the middle on the third line. The Sabres already have Sam Reinhart at winger when he is a true center as well. Eventually some of these skaters will need to go to their true positions.
With Ryan O'Reilly and Eichel as the top centers, most Sabres fans are fine with Rinehart remaining on the wing, however Buffalo needs to land a top free agent or draft somebody like Jesse Puljujärvi so Girgensons can go back to center. Johan Larsson and David Legwand aren't the answers on the bottom pairings. This team needs depth and that will start with the NHL draft.
If Buffalo was lucky enough to land the number one pick and take Auston Matthews, I'm sure Dan Bylsma could fit him in at wing. However this team needs to find some true wingers to fortify the roster.
